Swine enzootic pneumonia is a chronic respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, producing high morbidity rates and great economic losses. This handbook attempts to update, condense and simplify the large amount of available information about swine enzootic pneumonia, including a high number of graphic contents to provide the veterinary surgeon with a handy tool to fully understand, treat, control and prevent this disease.

Beatriz García Morante

Beatriz García Morante graduated in 2012 at the UAB, and a year later she obtained the interuniversity mastership in advanced immunology at Barcelona University (UB-UAB). Since 2014 she is developing her PhD thesis into the Industrial PhD Plan of the Generalitat de Catalunya, in collaboration agreement between the pharmaceutical industries at the Centre de Recerca en Sanitat Animal (CReSA-IRTA), located at the UAB campus. Her PhD thesis is based on the study and improvement of the experimental model of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae under the supervision of Dr. Marina Sibila and Dr. Joaquim Segalés. As a result of her work, she is author of some papers published both in national and international journals. Moreover, since 2015 she is performing a residency programme at the European College of Porcine Health and Management (ECPHM) under the tuition of Dr. Sergio López and Dr. Joaquim Segalés.

Joaquim Segalés

Joaquim Segalés graduated at the Veterinary School of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in 1991. Later he obtained his PhD degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1996 at the same university, after having completed a 15-month stay at Minnesota University (UM) in the United States, and being codirected by Drs. Mariano Domingo (UAB) and Carlos Pijoan (UM). In 2000 he obtained a diploma at the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP). In 2004 he obtained a diploma at the European College of Porcine Health Management (ECPHM), where he is a founding member and was president between 2013 and 2016. He is full professor at the Departament de Sanitat i d’Anatomia Animals of the Veterinary School at the UAB, where he teaches porcine pathology and clinics. Currently he also is Director of the Centre de Recerca en Sanitat Animal (CReSA), belonging to IRTA, located at the UAB campus.

Dr. Segalés has participated in multiple national and European research projects, particularly focused on different swine diseases, as well as collaboration agreements with sector companies, both national and international. Among the different research lines where he participates, it is noteworthy the porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus (PRRSV), Haemophilus parasuis, Aujeszky’s disease virus (ADV), Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, hepatitis E virus (HEV), torque teno sus virus, and diseases associated to porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2). He is coauthor of more than 270 papers at international scientific journals as well as 10 chapters on internationally renowned books. He is also coauthor of a book on swine necropsy as well as three books about clinical cases in pigs.

Marina Sibila

Marina Sibila graduated in biological sciences at Barcelona University (UB) in 1999. Hereafter she completed, under Dr. Maria Calsamiglia’s supervision, her PhD thesis on mollecular epidemiology of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infection at the Veterinary School of the UAB (2004).

After completing her PhD degree, she started her career as researcher at the Centre de Recerca en Sanidad Animal (CReSA-IRTA), where she continues her work about Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infections as well as other porcine pathogens like porcine circo virus type 2, porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus, Haemophilus para suis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Mycoplasma hyorhinis and other viral infections like TTV. Her research lines cover studies about mollecular epidemiology, development of experimental models, development of diagnostic tools, and vaccine efficacy trials. During her research career, Dr. Sibila has collaborated with many national and international research projects, has published over 60 scientific and disclosure papers and has participated as speaker in many congresses, both national and international. She is also coauthor of a book chapter about evaluation of respiratory lesions at slaughterhouse in swine and a manual of swine laboratory diagnosis. At the same time, Dr. Sibila has performed many teaching activities like PhD courses, classes at the swine health and production Master’s degree, and she has directed several PhD theses.
